Most of the greatest achievements of mankind are the result of hard teamwork. A determined loner can do many things, while a close-knit team can do almost anything. Moreover, an effective team does not necessarily have to consist of a large number of people.

Looking at market giants such as Google and Microsoft, it’s hard to believe that they once started their journey being small startups. Google was born thanks to a joint project of two students, and the original Microsoft staff consisted of three people. Today, by their example, we see what a handful of motivated people is capable of doing when working in the same direction.

Let’s review the three attributes that a strong team has.

1. A common goal

Imagine an orchestra, all the musicians of which simultaneously perform different musical compositions. As a result, instead of a beautiful melody, they produce an incoherent, unlistenable sound.

A team is not just a group of people who come together because they share the same interests. The unifying factor for a strong team is a common goal. By having a common goal, all members of the team act synchronously and do exactly what is required to achieve the desired result.

If you feel that your team resembles the orchestra described above, get together and discuss your current goal. It may turn out that your allies do not share it or misunderstand it. Then the goal must be reconsidered and formulated more clearly.

2. Strong motivation

The team, all members of which share common goals and values, is characterized by high morale. In such a team, everyone works not because they need to, but because they genuinely want and like to work.

If there’s no need to beg your employees, rush them to do work faster and remind them of the unfinished tasks; if they themselves do more than what is required of them and continuously generate new ideas, this means that everything is fine with the motivation in your team.

What if motivation is close to zero? Let your associates see the goal in a new light, discovering advantages that they might have previously overlooked. Talk with every team member individually. Explain how achieving the goal will affect him/her personally and the team as a whole.

3. Correct behavior and self-control

In a high-class team, people always strive for mutual understanding and compromise. They do not argue, but share their opinions. They do not gloat over someone who experiences trouble, instead, they provide help and training. They do not practice finger-pointing, they correct the mistakes collectively and do their best to avoid such mistakes from happening again.

Members of a close-knit team understand that squabbles, quarrels and rancour hinder the working process. They realize that their common goal is way more important than the momentary desire to vent.

If there is a tense and hostile atmosphere in your team, you need to take measures. Set a personal example: always be tactful, level-headed and friendly. Don’t react to rudeness with rudeness, so as not to fuel the conflict. Respond to aggressive attacks with the words: “I understand your claim, and now let’s discuss how to solve this issue.”

The first step to creating a team

Forming a dedicated and reliable team of like-minded individuals can be a challenge. But when you deal with it, you will be able to achieve results that you’ve never dreamed of.

Creating a team. Where to start? Of course, start with yourself. After all, you are the first member of your future team. First of all, you need to set yourself a goal that you believe in, a goal that will also inspire others.
