A young American, William Boeing, specialized in timber trade: he inherited the business from his father. But his real passion was aviation. He studied piloting and soon became the owner of his own seaplane. One of the flights was unsuccessful — when landing, William damaged the aircraft. In 1915, airplanes were rare, one could wait for spare parts for months, and Boeing, having rationally assessed the situation, decided to make parts by himself. Own sawmill came in handy, since seaplanes were made of wood back then.
The experience was successful, and already in 1916, William Boeing lifted his first airplane into the sky, becoming not only its engineer, but also a tester. Being inspired by success, he registered the Boeing Airplane Company.
In 1917, the United States entered the First World War. Boeing immediately got his first big clients who brought him 116 thousand dollars in revenue — the naval forces and the US army ordered 56 aircraft.
